Energy Overview

Ontario’s energy demand is forecasted to increase by 75% by 2050, driven by housing and economic growth, and the transition to clean energy. Municipalities helping to meet this demand by playing a crucial role in generation expansion, infrastructure planning and upgrades, and efficiency initiatives.

AMO Positions

  • Municipalities advocate for a clean, reliable and affordable energy supply to support local communities and economic growth.
  • Energy is a top provincial priority, central to growth and trade negotiation strategy. Municipalities are key partners in supporting Ontario’s energy priority and are helping to make it happen.
  • The province should commit to and deliver a fully resourced plan to meet net-zero emissions by 2050.
  • Energy planning and local growth planning should be coordinated to ensure that energy infrastructure is ready to support housing and economic growth.
  • As the costs and risks of funding new energy infrastructure shifts, the province should ensure they are not transferred to municipalities.
