Unlocking Opportunity through the Application of Human Rights-Based Approach to Municipal Planning

Municipal leaders across Ontario are increasingly tasked with navigating increasingly complex planning challenges that demand both a strong understanding of human rights principles and the ability to apply these principles effectively within their communities. However, many municipalities and their elected officials struggle to translate these broad directives into actionable policies, programs, or practices that resonate with their communities and support sustainable growth. This gap puts councillors at risk of being left behind as funding programs and opportunities continue to shift to align with the national direction to apply a human rights-based approach to housing.

Without the necessary expertise in human rights-based planning, councillors may find it difficult to unlock crucial funding opportunities, engage effectively with their communities, or navigate the evolving housing landscape - resulting in missed opportunities for economic development, legal vulnerabilities, and diminished public trust.

This workshop addresses these challenges by equipping councillors with the essential skills and knowledge needed to apply a human rights-based approach to municipal planning. During this workshop, councillors will learn how to secure funding, build community trust, ensure legal compliance, drive local economic growth, and elevate their municipality’s reputation—all key outcomes necessary for advancing their leadership skills and achieving success in their roles.

CP Planning has become a critical industry leader in translating international, national, and provincial human rights directions into practical and impactful planning practices. They apply their deep understanding of the complexities of municipal governance to design, deliver, and advise on projects and programming scaling neighbourhood, municipal, provincial, and national levels.

Councillors attending the training have the unique opportunity to learn from an industry leading organization which:

1.                  has 7 years of experience at the forefront of integrating human rights principles into the planning of housing development;

2.                  has a successful track record of helping councillors translate guidance from the National Housing Strategies into actions generate real-world results; and

3.                  has a deep understanding of historical, existing, and upcoming legislative and programmatic frameworks which, when tapped into unlock funding and momentum for economic development for sustained progress to build affordable housing to meet community needs.

AMO requires a certain threshold of attendance for the viability of workshops. If we are unable to meet this threshold 2 weeks in advance of the scheduled workshop, the workshop will be cancelled with AMO making all efforts for the workshop to be rescheduled.
